The next module in the educational series from Erica Synths and Moritz Klein is the EDU DIY Noise/S&H. It can add ballast to your filter sweeps and randomness to your modulations.
The EDU DIY rack is almost complete. This module number 7 of 9 modules in the series developed to help modular enthusiasts understand circuit design and how these fundamental synthesis build blocks work. I’ve tackled each one in turn and live streamed the bread-boarding and soldering. I have learned heaps about how modules work and the components that go into synthesizer module design. It’s a brilliantly useful thing for anyone interested in sound and electronics.
The Noise/S&H will bring a good dose of randomness to the synth voice we’ve been building. A sample & hold circuit can also do a bit of bit-crushing and generate some melodies and interesting modulations. The circuit uses a simple JFET-based implementation, augmented by an internal clock generator and dedicated slew output.
The noise generator inside offers up white, blue and pink noise for some interesting variations. The noise can be used for fattening up a patch as well as the source that’s sampled in the sample & hold circuit.
The Noise/S&H goes alongside the VCO, VCF, Dual VCA, Dual Envelope, Mixer, and case with power supply. Still to come are the Wavefolder and Stereo Output module. Each kit comes with all the components, PCB and front panel and an excellently detailed guide to examining the circuit on a breadboard and then soldering it together as a module.
