Changing a home air filter is the easiest and quickest way you can optimize the efficiency of your heating and cooling system. You need to change the air filter so that your system can purify the air in your home. The good news is that the procedure can take at least five to ten minutes. But you need to make sure that you have the right size of air filters before purchasing them. Remember that you will be removing an old filter and replacing it with a new one. This article is a guide to help you change home air filters.

You can avoid your HVAC system from switching on while you are in the middle of changing an air filter by turning off the thermostat. This can assist to protect your HVAC unit from loose debris or even a loose filter fitting getting into the duct. Alternatively, you can disconnect power from the furnace system when you are maintaining it.

After doing this, you need to find your furnace filter. You may need to refer to the manual of your heating and cooling system to locate your air filter. This manual can tell you the size and type of an air filter that is suitable for your heating and cooling system. But if you don’t have the operation manual, then you can check the blower compartment of your furnace or the air filter can be in the metal ductwork just before the blower fan.

Remove the old air filter

Before you decide to remove your old air filter, you should remember that you have to place the new one in the same direction as the old one. The air-flow direction arrow on your new air filter needs to point towards the furnace. You can use a permanent marker to draw the airflow direction arrow on the ductwork or furnace housing. Ideally, you should indicate the filter size and airflow direction.

Each HVAC filter tends to have a MERV rating that measures how the air filter efficiently captures pollutants that go through the heating and cooling system. MERV ratings range between 1, which is least efficient and 16, which is extremely efficient. Some HVAC experts believe that medium-efficiency air filters bring a good balance between filter cost and allergen removal. Once you have got an ideal air filter, you can remove the old filter and put it into a garbage bag.

Insert the new air filter

You should again take note of the arrow that is on the old filter frame while placing a new air filter. Remove the filter and put the new one in the same air direction. Keep in mind that a home air filter is designed to filter air in your house from one direction. Therefore, they can remove a lot of dirt without falling apart or collapsing.

Once you have inserted the new air filter, you need to make sure that you turn on the thermostat. With the fresh air filter, you can now start using your furnace again.
