How to prevent frequent shutdown of a power station through three-stage air filtration

Although the design of a gas turbine is as robust as possible, ensuring optimal performance requires attention to its environment. Dust particles can severely affect performance, especially when the turbine is operating in extreme climates, such as frost or high humidity. Over time, abrasive particles may erode or accumulate blades, and even the slightest change in the aerodynamics of turbine blades can have a major impact. The combination of salt particles and humid environments can cause particularly severe corrosion damage.

Although regular cleaning of the blades can solve this problem, it requires them to be turned off, resulting in a reduction in power generation, which was originally avoided. Removal of particles in the air requires an effective and powerful air filter, which can function even in harsh weather conditions without frequent maintenance.

For a power station and heating service company in Germany, their 30-year-old pulse filter intake system is no longer in optimal condition and often faces unplanned shutdowns. Upgrade to three-stage air filtration

Because people rely on the power station for heating, it cannot be shut down frequently. The company chose to replace its old hose jet filtration system with the most advanced Delbag MultiMaster Vario static filtration system, which includes a three-stage filter setting.

The filter system not only ensures more effective protection of the turbine blades, but also provides an opportunity to easily and actively replace the filter. The three-stage filter is expected to significantly save subsequent operating costs. Each of the three stages consists of 16 bag filters 4006 (ePM10 75%) in the first stage and 20 filter elements in the downstream stage. The second installs MultiPlus 8509 (ePM1 80%) as a reverse compact filter, and the third installs MultiPlus 8511 (E11). Overcoming obstacles: thinking outside the unit

Each site has its own challenges. In this power station, the foundation of the old filter room is a fixed concrete shaft, which also serves as a system for exhaust gas emission. This means that removing the shaft is not an option.

Delbag experts had to find a solution that would allow them to install all three filter stages in the limited space between the first and second axis. The team refurbished the air intake chamber at the front of the unit, and the combustion air was realized through two side covers.

By optimizing the air filter, changing different filter types, and using multiple filter stages, the operating cost of the air intake system can be reduced. The three-stage MultiMaster Vario filter system used to filter combustion air is designed for a total air flow of 55,000 cubic meters per hour, which is ideal for preventing any accumulation of dust that can cause scaling, corrosion or erosion.

To further prevent unplanned downtime, Delbag installed an infrared anti-icing system in the weatherproof cover to prevent the filter from freezing and make it operational at any time of the year. In addition, the system has a fully integrated noise reduction solution, so it complies with noise pollution regulations.
