Cornell Dubilier announced that its new patented PCD series of high-current AC harmonic filter capacitors provide a dual, built-in, fail-safe protection system, with one on each end of the capacitor.

Similar capacitors in this category have an open circuit pressure device under the top cover, and the capacitor needs to be installed from the bottom stud. By adding a bottom pressure device, the terminals of the PCD can be fixed to the rigid bus bar, allowing the bottom safety device to be activated when the bottom provides a suitable gap. When activated, the bottom pressure device expands outwards like a bellows.

Although these fail-safe devices are designed to prevent the shell from cracking at the end of their service life, the PCD series capacitors are designed to be very reliable, with a service life of more than 60,000 hours at rated voltage and temperature. Self-healing, metallized dielectric structures increase their reliability.

The PCD series capacitors have a rated value range of 20 µF to 125 µF, and a rated voltage range of 240 Vac to 600 Vac 50/60Hz. The diameter of the case varies from 63.5 to 116 mm. Custom capacitance and voltage ratings, dimensions and performance characteristics are also provided. Need specific application conditions, especially the harmonic content curve, in order to properly adjust the size of the capacitor to obtain the best performance. The standard terminal is tinned brass with M6x1 thread. Other terminal types are available.

In addition, PCD capacitors have a sturdy structure, allowing them to be used in high humidity environments. This series has been tested for 1000 hours under temperature-humidity-deviation conditions. At 85°C/85% RH, they are placed in the highest climate category of category III-B according to IEC 60384.

Applications include UPS, AC tuning filters, AC input filtering, line conditioning, noise suppression, variable speed drives and wind turbine motors. PCD is an upgraded version of European AC power film capacitors, and usually only has a downwardly extended interrupt mechanism. When fail-safe operation is critical, the dual pressure interrupters of the PCD series provide users with maximum installation flexibility.
