The long-awaited VCF is the next module in the Erica Synths educational DIY range. It’s going to bring a lot of character and dynamics to the whole EDU system.

It’s been a lot of fun building the VCO, the dual VCA, the envelopes and the sequencer but no subtractive modular system is complete without the filter. So it’s very exciting that the VCF is the next module to arrive.

In case you’re not aware Erica Synths got together with module designer and education Moritz Klein to produce a little system of Eurorack modules that teach you about circuit design. When building a module from a kit it’s very easy to simply follow the instructions and solder it together without any knowledge of how circuits work. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but the EDU DIY series is an opportunity to get stuck into how these circuits work. Before building the kit you work through the manual building the component parts on a breadboard.

I’ve been building each of these as a live stream video over the last few months and it’s been challenging and awesome. I can’t wait to get into how filters work.

The EDU DIY VCF is a low pass filter, based on a diode ladder and sticks to super basic and widely available components. Apparently, the approach is designed to be as easy as possible and avoids the “tricky diff-pair setup classic ladder filters rely on.” I’ve no idea what that means now but hopefully, I will after the build.

Modules still to make include a wavefolder, noise and S&H module and a stereo mixer with a headphone output.

The filter is available now for €70 ex VAT and I’ll probably do the live stream in a couple of weeks.
